History
Sokli (Savukoski, NE Finland) is a polymetallic deposit which has been studied for over 50 years' time. Sokli carbonatite deposit is potential for many raw materials (for example phosphorus and rare earth elements), which are critical in the transition for climate neutrality.
In December 2020, Suomen Malmijalostus acquired the rights and responsibilities of the Sokli mining project located in Savukoski for its wholly-owned Sokli Oy.
Geological surveys and new mineral discoveries
Sokli has been studied for decades by the previous owners. We are continuing the surveys in order to get a comprehensive picture of the deposit.
Sokli Oy's starting point is to find out the usability of all potential types of ore and raw materials, when in the past certain types of ore and raw materials have been mapped to a limited extent.
In the fall of 2023, exploratory drilling began in the area of the existing mining district in Sokli, and by the summer of 2024, approximately 12 kilometers had been drilled. The research found two new rare earth elements, kukharenkoite and cordylite, which have not been found in Finland before. Geological drilling continued in the area of the existing mining district at the beginning of June 2024.
Studies have been prepared with geomagnetic measurements and other geophysical methods that promote bedrock mapping. Solid basic knowledge helps e.g. to optimize drilling, which in turn reduces costs and environmental impact.
Our goal is to start a more detailed feasibility study of the project in 2026.
